Over the past several years, at least two hippopotamuses have been established in the Bujumbura wastewater treatment plant’s ponds, mainly in optional lagoons and maturation ponds.These lagoons provide an adequate habitat for this herbivore that grazes peacefully on the ponds’ banks and edges. Hippos are not the only ones who have established themselves in the treatment basins.
The Lake Tanganyika Water Management project, funded by the European Union and implemented by Enabel, the Belgian Development Agency, in collaboration with Lake Tanganyika Authority, has just completed the rehabilitation of the two first drying bed of the Buterere treatment plant.
The LATAWAMA project, implemented by Enabel with the European Union’s financial support, and in collaboration with Lake Tanganyika Authority, has just launched the drying beds’ rehabilitation at the Buterere wastewater treatment plant (Bujumbura, Burundi). Gordien Ndikumana, the coordinator of former SETEMU (Urban technical services), gives his appreciation of this activity’s progress.
This Tuesday, on 8th February 2021, the Lake Tanganyika Water Management project – LATAWAMA, funded by the European Union and implemented by Enabel (Belgium Development Agency), in collaboration with the Lake Tanganyika Authority proceeded with the first official handing over of equipment to the Municipality of Kigoma/Ujiji as part of the LATAWAMA project technical support for solid waste management service
For nearly a year, the level of Lake Tanganyika has been rising and staying at a high level. From Bujumbura to Mpulungu in Zambia, the situation is the same: flooding, destruction of homes and infrastructure, the disappearance of beaches and destruction of vegetation.
