The Burundian Office for the Protection of the Environment, OBPE, and the laboratory of the sewage treatment plant of Buterere under the Burundian Office of Habitat, Urbanism, and Construction, OBUHA officially received the office equipment from the LATAWAMA project. The Laboratory of the Waste Water Treatment Plant in Buterere will be monitoring the quality of the wastewater entering the basins and the wastewater discharges downstream of the maturation basin of the Bujumbura wastewater treatment plant. The OBPE laboratory will participate in the Lake Tanganyika water monitoring network. Both laboratories were equipped with new functional office furniture. The handing over of this equipment was carried out on Wednesday, August 04, 2021, in the presence of senior officers of these two institutions, such as the Director of Environment and Climate Change at OBPE, Ms. Renilde Ndayishimyiye, and the Director of Environment, Hygiene, and sanitation Mr. Cleophas Bizabishaka on behalf of OBUHA.

Shortly, these laboratories will receive the analytical equipment essential to the conduct of environmental analyses.

As a reminder, the monitoring network of Lake Tanganyika will include four laboratories:

Burundian Office for Environmental Protection, Bujumbura, Burundi, Tanzanian Fisheries Research Institute, Kigoma, Tanzania, Lake Tanganyika Research Unit, Mpulungu, Zambia;
Hydrobiology Research Centre, Uvira, DRC.

The LATAWAMA project is being implemented by the Lake Tanganyika Authority and the Belgian Development Agency. The European Union funds the project.
