Lake Tanganyika water monitoring

Lake Tanganyika water monitoring

The design, implementation and exploitation of a water quality monitoring and control network tool for Lake Tanganyika are one of the key outcomes of the Latawama project. Thereby, the implementation of an Integrated Water Resources Management Policy cannot be done without validated data in terms of qualitative monitoring of water. Data which are also indispensables for policymakers, research institutes, managers and fundamental to understand issues related to climate change, biodiversity conservation and fisheries activities.

Therefore, the Project intends to develop the following activities:

  • Design of the monitoring and control network tool (measuring station, harmonisation of parameters, monitoring sampling plan, validation, data editing, etc.)
  • Strengthening reference laboratories through the purchase of sampling, analysis and consumables equipment;
  • Laboratory training, including in the data validation and interpretation process;
  • Development and exploitation of a “Water Quality – ALT” database and a WebGIS
  • Development of Institutional Partnerships

The LATAWAMA project is funded by the European Union. The implementation of this project was entrusted to Enabel, Belgian Development Agency, for an amount of €6,900,000, the duration of the intervention is 4 years.
