During the Ninth Ordinary Meeting of the Management Committee and Eighth Conference of Ministers of the Lake Tanganyika Authority, held in Lusaka from 11th to 14th February 2020, various ongoing and new projects were presented. This is the case of the Lake Tanganyika Water Management project implemented by the Belgian Development Agency, Enabel on funding from the European Union.
In his presentation, Didier CADELLI, Intervention Manager of the Project, informed the participants that the Project reinforces the already existing efforts to preserve the water quality of Lake Tanganyika. He said the actions of the Project are underpinned by three principles: to provide the ALT and its partners with the support and coaching necessary to carry out its role effectively; to promote the sharing of information through awareness-raising actions, appropriate communication and training and to promote good practices in solid and liquid sanitation through pilot projects in 5 cities bordering Lake Tanganyika. The intervention also aims to strengthen the role and capacity of the Tanganyika Lake Authority through the development of water resources monitoring tools to support decision-making processes.

Obviously interested, the participants were entitled to speak on questions that include the establishment of the database on Lake Tanganyika. “This will be a tool that will provide up-to-date information on the Lake and will inform on decision making in preserving the quality of the Lake”, said Didier CADELLI. The tone is set for the implementation of this Project which will be implemented by Enabel, Belgian Development Agency on funding from the European Union. The total amount of the Project is 6.9 million €. The duration of the intervention is four years.
